With more than 100 years in business, EMC Insurance Companies has stood the test of time—providing comprehensive protection, superior service and financial security to its policyholders, agents and team members.

EMC Timeline

EMC began in 1911 as an association of business people providing workers’ compensation coverage to Iowa manufacturers. Today, EMC ranks among the top 60 insurance organizations in the United States, selling its property and casualty insurance solely through independent insurance agencies in more than 40 states. Plus, we write reinsurance contracts worldwide through EMC Reinsurance Company.

1911 Employers Mutual Casualty Association is formed on April 24 to provide workers’ compensation insurance for its members.
1914 Employers Mutual Casualty Association goes into operation with the enactment of Iowa’s workers’ compensation laws.
1920 Employers Mutual Casualty Association begins to market automobile insurance.
1924 Employers Mutual Casualty Association name changes to Employers Mutual Casualty Company.
1925 EMC stepped into the other side of insurance, assumed reinsurance, or reinsuring insurance written by another company.
1928 The company is licensed to sell insurance in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.
1934 The first branch office is established in Wichita, Kan.
1938 The company moves into its own building in downtown Des Moines.
1955 The company adds homeowners, inland marine and multiperil coverage to its book of business.
1956 The company’s home office is expanded to accommodate its growing staff.
1962 Employers Modern Life Company is formed to provide property and casualty agents with life insurance products.
1968 To enhance its marketing presence on the East Coast, the company affiliates with Union Mutual Insurance Company of Providence.
1969 EMC is licensed to do business in all 50 states.
1971 EMC’s 60th anniversary is celebrated with the opening of a new 10-story office building at 717 Mulberry St. in downtown Des Moines.
1973 To acquire a larger share of the fire insurance market in North Dakota, the company acquires Dakota Fire Insurance Company.
1974 EMC Insurance Group Inc., a downstream holding company, is formed.
1975 EMC Underwriters Ltd. is formed to broker business that cannot find insurance policies through regular insurance markets.
1976 Illinois EMCASCO Insurance Company is formed to help the company better compete in Illinois.
1981 EMC Reinsurance Company organizes to handle part of EMC’s reinsurance assumed business from other property and casualty companies.
1982 Acquisition of American Liberty Insurance Company—a Birmingham, Ala., insurance company—gives EMC a stronger presence in southern states.
1982 EMC Insurance Group Inc. launches its initial public offering, followed by other offerings in 1985 and 2004.
1984 Acquisition of Farm and City Insurance Companies provides EMC and its agents with access to a stable source of nonstandard risk automobile insurance.
1989 Employers Mutual Charitable Foundation (now the EMC Insurance Foundation) is established.
1991 The company reaches $1 billion in assets.
1997 EMC’s new 20-story office tower opens.
1997 Affiliation with Hamilton Mutual Insurance Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, expands EMC’s marketing efforts.
2001 EMC launches Count on EMC® brand.
2002 EMC reaches over $2 billion in assets, more than $1 billion in written premium and more than 500,000 policies in force.
2003 EMC National Life Company is formed by the merger of Employers Modern Life and National Travelers Life.
2005 Introduced EMC Choice® products for business owners and tailored coverages for specific industries.
2007 Assets reach over $3 billion for the first time in the company’s history.
2010 EMC Insurance Group Inc. is named to Forbes 100 Most Trustworthy Companies list. Awarded again in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
2010 EMC purchased the Hub Tower at 7th and Walnut in downtown Des Moines.
2011 EMC Insurance Companies celebrates 100 years in business.
2013 A.M. Best upgrades EMC Insurance Companies’ rating to A (Excellent) with a stable outlook.
2015 Assets reach over $4 billion for the first time in the company’s history.
2017 EMC Insurance Companies opens a new four-story office building at 219 Eighth Street in Des Moines.
2017 EMC joined the world’s largest insurtech connected ecosystem, Plug and Play.
2018 EMC Insurance Companies announces the decision to exit personal lines.
2019 Employers Mutual Casualty Company (EMCC) acquired all remaining shares of EMC Insurance Group Inc. (EMCI) that EMCC did not already own, and its stock is no longer listed for trading.
2020 Scott Jean assumed the role of President and CEO when Bruce Kelley retired after a 35-year career with EMC.
